Environmentally friendly across the oceans

Meyer Werft relies on LNG - and on Wieland Eucaro

Wieland Eucaro in Bremen makes just-in-time deliveries to the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg. This is where ultra-modern cruise ships are built – including the world's first with environmentally friendly liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion.

The Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Lower Saxony, is known to many people - even if they are not cruise enthusiasts. This is due to the spectacular pictures seen when one of the completed ocean liners travels across the Ems River towards the North Sea, virtually right through the middle of the landscape. The tradition-rich family business has built 49 luxury liners over the past decades – for shipping companies such as AIDA Cruises, Dream Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International.

What is probably less well known is that semi-finished products from Wieland Eucaro are used in most of these cruise ships – including in those built for TUI by Meyer Werft in Turku, Finland, under the name "mein Schiff". The Bremen-based Wieland-company supplies the shipyard with between 20 and 30 tonnes of pipes, fittings and special flanges per ship made of the seawater-resistant, easily formable and refractory alloy Eucaro 10 (CuNi10Fe1.6Mn). The material also offers a wide range of joining possibilities, it can be welded or soldered, but pressed and flanged connections and the use of pipe couplings are also possible. These advantages allow the shipyard great flexibility depending on the requirements and installation options.

Semi-finished products made of the alloy Eucaro 10 are used for the engines’ sea cooling water pipes, the supply lines for drinking water treatment systems, for tank heating systems, and for the treatment systems for the sea water pool. They are also used on the latest, particularly environmentally friendly AIDA ships of the Helios class. These luxury liners are the first in the world to be equipped with liquid natural gas (LNG) propulsion. They burn the alternative fuel completely free of sulphur and soot. The experts at Meyer Werft and their partners invested 10 years of research and development work in this pioneering achievement until the first of the environmentally friendly ships – the AIDAnova – was launched in December 2018. In the meantime, the third ship of the Helios class is under construction. Further cruise ships with LNG propulsion will follow, and several other shipping companies have already placed corresponding orders with Meyer Werft. Pipes, fittings and special flanges from Wieland Eucaro are always on board.

Material for shipbuilding

The pipelines on a cruise ship are about 250 kilometres long. The CNC-controlled machines in the pipe production department of Meyer Werft also process material from Wieland Eucaro.
